Beijing - A court yesterday sentenced the disgraced Beijing mayor, Chen Xitong, to 16 years in prison for his role in a corruption scandal that rocked China.

The sentence means the 68-year-old Chen, the most senior official to be exposed in a corruption scandal since the communists swept to power in 1949, is likely to spend most of the rest of his life behind bars.
