Jakarta - Settlers sought refuge at military and police posts yesterday as calm returned to Wamena in Indonesia's West Papua province after violence killed 28 people, authorities said.
Pro-independence Papuans also released 22 migrants they had held hostage since Saturday after negotiations between local leaders and representatives of the police, the military and the local administration, police said.
A military officer in Wamena said that over 1,000 refugees, mostly civilian settlers, were flooding military complexes and police stations seeking safety.
