Pakistani security forces have arrested the al Qaeda mastermind who planned assassination attempts against President Pervez Musharraf, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said today.

"We have arrested Abu Faraj Farj al Liby. It is a huge success," the minister told the Reuters news agency.

Mr Musharraf, a key ally in the US-led "war against terrorism", survived two assassination attempts in December 2003.
