NO talks with Sinn Fein, no role for Senator George Mitchell, and no discussions about the constitutional status of Northern Ireland. These are basic conditions set yesterday by the DUP for its participation in all party negotiations.
There are a number of others, set out in a hard line election manifesto launched yesterday by the DUP leader, the Rev Ian Paisley, in the form of a "Covenant with the Ulster People".
Dr Paisley set the tone of the DUP's campaign in familiar terms, dramatising the monstrosity of a perceived international conspiracy and threat to Ulster.
"This election is about the very existence of this province as an integral part of the United Kingdom", he declared at a press conference. "It is a life and death struggle.
"The Major government has so yoked itself to the pan nationalist front, IRA/Sinn Fein, the SDLP, the Dublin government, the Kennedy Washington Clinton lobby and the European Union that they are caving in every day to appease the IRA and get them into the planned negotiations by hook or by crook.
"The most dangerous element now in this evil confederacy is the British government. It is a craven government, given to deceit."
He accused the UUP leader, Mr David Trimble, of "shuttling between Major and Bruton". He said Mr Trimble had been "sold" the Mitchell plan and had become an advocate of it.
"The Mitchell plan is not to be confused with the Mitchell principles", he said. "We could agree democratic principles, but not the plan, which outwardly professes the principles, but turns them on their head to assist the IRA."
The election was a roll call to all unionists and they had got to, come out as never before, said Mr Ian Paisley Junior.
His father added: "It is only a massive vote for me that is going to give the right signal, to the British government especially, that they cannot go on in their caving in to Dublin and their abject surrender to the pan nationalist front."
Dr Paisley said that if the union was on the table at the all party negotiations, or if there was an attempt to raise it, the DUPI, would not be there. Nor would it talk to Sinn Fein.
The DUP is to base its campaign on the seven point "Covenant with the Ulster People". It guarantees "not to budge" on these points:
"Ulster firmly within the United Kingdom;
"The removal of Dublin's illegal claim over Ulster;
"No role for Dublin in Ulster's affairs;
"Democratic and accountable structures of government for Ulster;
"IRA/Sinn Fein and all terrorists made to hand over their illegal weaponry and dismantle their terrorist machine;
"The principle of consent and self determination for the people of Northern Ireland fully established;
"No negotiation on the basis of the Downing Street Declaration and the Framework Document."
Dr Paisley said that in early canvassing he was already getting an overwhelming message of support, "even in areas where we never had massive support".
The party is running more than 50 candidates in the May 30th poll.
