A nursing home owner was sentenced to three months in jail and one of her staff was sentenced to a month in jail yesterday when they appeared in court for breaches of nursing home legislation.

Margaret Ahlart, of Rest haven, Meelin, Newmarket, Co Cork, was convicted at Kanturk District Court of failing to ensure that the maximum number of persons to be maintained and accommodated in shared rooms at her nursing home did not exceed the number it was registered to accommodate on January 18th last.

Ahlart was also convicted of a similar offence on June 7th last. The head nurse at the home, Mary Healy, also of Resthave, Meelin, Newmarket, was also convicted of failing to provide a high standard of nursing care.
