Mr Bertie Ahern has become the first Taoiseach to receive the Grand Cross of Merit from the Order of Malta.
The award was presented by the president of the Irish association of the order, Mr Peter B. Pearson, in recognition of Mr Ahern's work for peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
