An Bord Pleanála is to hold an oral hearing tomorrow into a plan for a hotel, retail and car-parking development within the medieval town wall of Athenry, Co Galway.

The proposal by Oyster Homes Ltd, which has been approved by Galway County Council, involves constructing a three-storey hotel, supermarket, retail complex and underground car park on a seven-hectare site.

Some 28 bodies and individuals objected to and made submissions on the original application. Concerns ranged from architectural design to traffic congestion to the impact on a designated heritage town.

The local area plan for Athenry was adopted by the council in December.
