An Iraqi civilian was killed and two were wounded in what residents today said was a mortar attack in southern Baghdad.
They said at least three mortar bombs had hit a residential area yesterday evening.
One punched a hole through a reinforced concrete roof, one struck near a local electricity station and one destroyed stalls in a market that had been bustling earlier in the day as shoppers stocked up ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan.
Hospital officials said one man was killed and two people had been wounded.
The US military had no immediate word on the attack and it was not clear if the intended target was the nearby Daura power station.
Saboteurs have targeted Iraqi oil and power installations to disrupt US-led efforts to stabilise and rebuild Iraq after the war that toppled former President Saddam Hussein in April.
