Fiona McCannasked people on the streets of Dublin yesterday whether they welcomed the Government's announcement of a guarantee on all deposits and certain debts in six Irish banks.

Margaret Anne Ryan, Tipperary:

"I would transfer my money out if I had a huge amount in the bank."

Theresa O'Hanlon, Crumlin:

"It sounded to me like a good idea. It does reassure me. I don't think there's any need for panic, not at the moment."

Rena O'Donovan, Cork:

"I suppose it was a good idea. I do feel panicked, absolutely, but I wouldn't have enough money to take out. I do have a mortgage, however.

"It all depends on what the next budget throws up, how the taxpayer will be affected. Right now, there's not enough in there for me to be worried about."
