Off-duty garda foils attempted Dublin robbery

A man (27) has been arrested after an attempt to rob a building society in Dublin.

A man (27) has been arrested after an attempt to rob a building society in Dublin.

A man entered the building society on the Old Lucan Road, Palmerstown, at 9.45 a.m. armed with a hammer and a can of lighter fuel. He demanded cash and threatened staff by spraying the lighter fuel over the counter.

An off-duty member of Garda was passing the building society at the time and was alerted to the robbery. He entered the building and a  man was arrested.

The man is being held in Ballyfermot Garda station.
