NUI Galway and charity to run postgraduate cardiology course

New master’s course first of its type in Ireland

NUI Galway plans to provide postgraduate training in cardiovascular disease prevention in a community partnership with the heart and stroke charity Croí.

The new master's course in preventive cardiology will be the first of its type in the State, according to NUIG, and one of only two of its kind in the world. The founder course in this area at London's Imperial College is "fully supportive", the university says.

Croí, the west of Ireland cardiology foundation, helped to develop the programme with industry partners and HSE West. Programme director Dr Gerard O’Flaherty said the course would appeal to doctors, nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists, pharmacists, sports scientists, healthcare managers, health promotion graduates and health economists, “reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of preventive cardiology”.

Croí chief executive Neil Johnson said the collaboration with NUIG would "contribute significantly to translating scientific evidence to practice in reducing mortality and morbidity from chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity".
