Washington - US authorities last night appeared near the end of their investigation into how two hard drives containing nuclear secrets disappeared for a month and then resurfaced inside a secure area at Los Alamos laboratories.

Energy Secretary Bill Richardson practically ruled out the possibility of espionage: "There is no evidence that any copies had been made of the drives' contents," he said.
