Ireland's Melanie Nocher set a new Irish record to win heat two of the 200-metre backstroke this afternoon but it was not enough to qualify for tomorrow's semi-final.

Nocher's time of two minutes 12.29 seconds was marginally quicker than the Irish record but nearly two seconds behind the slowest of the semi-final qualifiers.

Nocher set off at a quick pace and despite tiring in the last 50 metres she managed to hold off Zuzanna Maszuek of Poland and Lydia Morant of Spain.
