THE Northern Ireland Police Authority has decided no further action is necessary after it questioned an authority member, Mr Trevor Wilson, an Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) councillor, about his alleged conduct during the period of the Drumcree standoff.
The SDLP MP for West Belfast, Dr Joe Hendron, described a police authority statement on the matter as "totally unsatisfactory".
Mr Wilson, a member of Cookstown Council, gave fellow authority members a "full explanation of his actions and answered a range of forthright questions put to him" on Tuesday, according to a statement from the police authority.
The statement added that members accepted Mr Wilson's account of events and agreed no further action was necessary. The police authority now regards the matter as closed and "no criminal proceedings are to be taken against Mr Wilson". The explanation follows a parliamentary question which Dr Hendron tabled in the House of Commons.
He asked if the Northern Secretary, Sir Patrick Mayhew, would confirm if the Police Authority for Northern Ireland were investigating claims that a member of the authority, Mr Trevor Wilson, was involved in an illegal blockade at Cookstown during the week prior to the 12th of July, and if he would make a statement.
Dr Hendron said the police authority statement was "totally unsatisfactory" and further clarification was needed from the authority. The public was entitled to know what questions were put to Mr Wilson, and what answers were given.
