Dublin City Council dismissed speculation last night that the erection of the long-awaited Spire in O'Connell Street would be postponed until after Christmas.

A spokesman for Dublin City Council said last night's reports in an evening newspaper were "totally unfounded and inaccurate" and confirmed that work on erecting the spire will have started "by Christmas" .

"All sections are shipshape; it was getting the specifications right that caused the delay," said the spokesman.

"Minor challenges in relation to this problem have been overcome."
