The Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, has dismissed reports that he has decided on the form of rail link between Dublin Airport and the city centre that he will recommend to Government.

Speaking yesterday, the Minister said no decision had yet been made on whether the airport should be served by a metro link through the north city to St Stephen's Green or the alternative link from the airport to the Dublin to Belfast rail line with a connection via the Phoenix Park tunnel to Heuston Station.

The Minister said the preferred metro option was a line which ran over-ground from the airport, on a raised track in the vicinity of Dublin City University and then underground to St Stephen's Green. It could be build for "about €2 billion" and would be overseen by the Railway Procurement Agency. It would probably be funded using a form of public-private partnership, according to the Minister.

But Mr Brennan said he had promised Iarnród Éireann that he would "have another look" at that company's proposals for a cheaper rail connection from the airport to the Dublin-Belfast line.
