Ninety calves in Clonlara in east Clare have been culled as a precaution against foot and mouth disease

Ninety calves in Clonlara in east Clare have been culled as a precaution against foot and mouth disease. None of the animals showed symptoms of the disease.

A Department of Agriculture spokesman said the calves were culled because the Department was "not satisfied with the animals' origin."

The spokesman added gardaí have begun an investigation to find out where the animals came from.

Blood samples from the calves have been sent to a laboratory in Abbotstown in Dublin for tests.
