Weimar - Ceremonies were held in the German city of Weimar yesterday for the centenary of the death of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, whose doctrine of the superman was seized on by the Nazis as a justification for their racist policies.

Many scholars deny the validity of the Nazi connection, saying the 19th century Nietzsche's efforts to break free of traditional values and morality were misinterpreted.

Commentators were saying yesterday that Nietzsche's work should be remembered for its poetry and literary value, as much as for its philosophy.
