Legislation to prepare for restoration of devolved government in Northern Ireland was introduced in the British House of Lords today.

The Northern Ireland (Monitoring Commission) Bill gained a formal first reading.

Lords Leader Lord Williams of Mostyn said it would establish under international law an independent commission with monitoring functions and amend rules about exclusion from ministerial office in Northern Ireland.

It would also change rules on "censure" resolutions in the Northern Ireland Assembly and make provision about reduction of remuneration of Assembly Members.

Its second reading is expected to be debated on Friday.
