A suspicious package was delivered to the Stormont parliament building in Northern Ireland this morning, ireland.comhas learned.

The package was handed to security staff in the building this morning.

A statement from the Northern Ireland Office said "procedures established for such an event were immediately put into effect". These included contacting the chief medical officer and emergency services.

The package was removed by the Northern Ireland Fire Service, and given to the police for forensic examination.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the package contained a suspicious substance and is currently being examined.

Any members of staff who came into contact with the package were notified, and advised on the relevant procedures to follow.
