New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has revised the number of people feared dead in the rubble of the World Trade Center down to 6,398 people.

The lower number was mostly due to duplication of names on lists of the missing.

The estimated death toll from the attacks on the United States now stands at 6,910.

Mr Giuliani repeated his statement that it would be a "miracle" if anyone were still found alive in the rubble.

He acknowledged "we're never going to recover all" of the victims of the hijacking of two commercial aircraft that rammed the twin 110-story towers.

More than 60 countries, including Ireland, have now reported citizens dead or missing.
