A reinforced concrete tower, 39m (nearly 130ft) high, is being added to the skyline of Ballymun, in north Dublin, with a capacity to store five million litres of drinking water for residents of the area.

Designed by McCarthy Hyder, consultant engineers, and Michael Collins Architects, the stem of the tower is shaped like a parabolic curve to enhance its visual impact, and it will be floodlit.

The development, which is being funded by the Department of the Environment, will also include a reservoir holding a further 30 million litres of drinking water.

It will be completed within 18 months.
