A new drive to teach Islam in Britain's schools is set to be begin after Education Secretary Charles Clarke backed the move.
Organised by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), the scheme will entail resource packs prepared for schools include books, videos and CDs that the MCB hopes will help overcome "barriers" to teaching Islam in schools.
Mr Clarke said the project was vital to creating understanding between different cultures. "It is only through understanding that this country can move forward as a true multi-faith and multi-cultural society."
"We must ensure children grow up with a better understanding of their friends and neighbours."
Iqbal Sacranie, secretary-general of the MCB, said education said: "These resources, developed by our team of educationalists, aim to overcome the barriers to the teaching of Islam experienced by so many of our teachers by making available creative, engaging and child-friendly resources on Islam and Muslims."
