Singapore - A government-backed candidate, Mr S. R. Nathan, was officially declared Singapore's sixth president after the close of nominations yesterday, with three other candidates disqualified.
The returning officer, Mr Tan Boon Huat, said that only the nomination papers of Mr Nathan had been accepted in Singapore's poll for head of state. Mr Tan also said "no valid objection" was made during the one-hour nomination process, rendering a national poll scheduled for August 28th unnecessary.
