A kit which aims to provide vital information about medical conditions to the emergency services "has the potential to save lives", according to Dr Stephen Cusack, A&E consultant at Cork University Hospital.

The PIP - Personal Information Pack - was developed by Pfizer Healthcare Ireland to contain information on a person's GP, medical condition and medication.

The plastic kit is available in pharmacies for €2 and contains a booklet to be filled in by its owner with basic medical information as well as an area for pharmacists to add labels detailing the holder's current medication.

Emergency workers are trained to recognise a sticker, placed inside the hall door and included with the kit, which alerts them to the presence of the PIP. Profits from their sale will go to Age Action Ireland.
