Limerick's Moyross housing estate was transformed into a scene from Bethlehem at the weekend, when about 300 people gathered to celebrate the "true meaning of Christmas".
The Nativity play was organised by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, who moved into the troubled estate earlier this year.
The five monks set up a crib outside their friary which recently opened in the Delmege Park estate, an area which has suffered due to gangland violence.
The Moyross Nativity began with a parade with about 100 children dressed as angels and shepherds.
A local newborn, James, played the part of baby Jesus in a stable built for the event.
A donkey, bullock and two goats named Kosmos and Damian were supplied by local farmers.
"We've been absolutely blessed since we moved into Moyross and have been received with open arms by the community. Saturday was another chance for us to say thank you to the people," said organiser Brother Martin Irwin.
Locals returned the compliment, raising €250 for the monks' Christmas dinner.
Bishop of Limerick Dr Donal Murray described Christmas as a time of hope "especially here in Moyross".
