The Garda at Buncrana has released the names of the five people who were killed in yesterday's two-car collision in Co Donegal.

The two men who died were named as Latvian national Danielius Abartis (23), with an address at The Crescent, Buncrana and Recardas Beilskis (35), originally from Lithuania with an address at Garvery, Burnfoot, Co Donegal.

The three women were named as Aija Porcika (38) and her daughter Ginta Veite (19), along with Marita Kerpe (28) who were all originally from Lativa and with an address at The Hawthorne's, Buncrana.

Mr Abartis was travelling in an Audi with the only survivor, also a Latvian national. He remains in a stable condition in Letterkenny General Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. The other four victims were all travelling in a Volkswagon Vento.

Post mortem examinations have been completed and gardai are in consulatations with the families and relevant embassies to have the remains returned home.

The tragedy brought the death toll on the state's roads so far this year to 63 - a rate of more than two deaths for each day of 2006.

Locals in the Inishowen Peninsula in north east Donegal said more than 20 people have been killed in the region in the past two years.

Three men and two women in their early 20s also died in a two-car smash at Muff, near Buncrana last October.
