A five-storey building collapsed in central Nairobi today with more than 280 construction workers inside, killing at least seven people and injuring more than 70.

Three were dead at the construction site while four others died undergoing treatment in hospital.

More than 70 seriously injured people were taken to Kenyatta General Hospital, where six were in critical condition, Dr Samuel Ngiru said, adding that there would be further deaths if more blood was not received.

Rescue workers were also running out of oxygen to administer to survivors.

Abbas Gullet, the secretary-general of the Kenya Red Cross, said the British government had agreed to send a special team with rescue dogs and high-tech equipment to assist the retrieval process. The team is expected to arrive tomorrow morning.

Dozens of rescuers dug into the rubble in downtown Nairobi with their bare hands while public works officials used power saws and cutters.

The injured were loaded into any available car to be taken to hospitals.
