A murder investigation has been launched into the death of a man whose body was found at an apartment complex in Dublin early on Saturday morning.

Neighbours alerted gardaí to a disturbance at Manor Villas, in the Harold's Cross area, at about 6.30am.

On arrival gardaí found a man who had received a number of stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man was arrested close to the apartment block on Saturday morning and was taken to Sundrive Road Garda station, where he is being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

It is understood that the detained man took ill while being questioned by detectives in relation to the incident.

A Garda statement last night revealed he had been moved to St James's Hospital to receive treatment. It said he had not received "any physical injuries".

A large crime scene surrounding the apartment block on Mount Argus Grove was cordoned off by members of the Garda Technical Bureau on Saturday morning.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis examined the scene before the man's body was removed from the apartment block.

A postmortem was carried out on the man on Saturday night and it confirmed he had died "as a result of multiple stab wounds".

Following the release of the postmortem results the case was upgraded to a murder investigation, which is now being headed up by gardaí from Terenure Garda station.

Gardaí conducted enquiries in the area in an attempt to find witnesses to the incident and they have appealed to anyone in the area who may have information regarding the incident to to contact Sundrive Road Garda station.

Gardaí said they could not comment on Sunday newspaper reports that the victim had been repeatedly stabbed in his upper body with a garden shears and that the forensic team discovered the weapon while they combed the area.
