Entrants are being sought for a new awards scheme which will recognise efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding in Ireland.

The former Irish international football player, Paul McGrath, will later this year present the awards, managed by the multicultural newspaper, Metro Éireann.

The paper's editor, Mr Abel Ugba, said the awards were designed "to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions of individuals and groups to creating cross-cultural understanding and co-operation in Ireland".

The awards will be presented in four categories of individual and group multicultural awards and individual and group media awards.

Mr Niall Crowley, chief executive of the Equality Authority, will chair the panel of judges.

Nominations from individuals and groups are now open and entry forms are available from the Awards Co-ordinator at Metro Éireann, telephone: 01- 8690670. Website: www.metroeireann.com/awards
