Muldoon in Derry team despite injury

Derry manager Mickey Moran has selected Enda Muldoon for Sunday's third round qualifier despite the All-Star forward suffering a hamstring strain less than two weeks ago.

Muldoon is named at corner forward alongside captain Paddy Bradley, but whether he takes the field against Limerick in Castlebar is another matter entirely. Muldoon pulled up after just two minutes into a recent club game for Ballinderry against Glenullin and has failed to train since.

The only change to the Derry team that beat Down on July 3rd in Newry is Gavin Donaghy for influential midfielder Fergal Doherty, who damaged ligaments in his ankle against Down and is a doubt for the rest of the championship. The switch sees Donaghy come in at wing forward with Johnny McBride moving out to centre field alongside Patsy Bradley.

Also included in the line-up are two of the most promising young players in the country, Mark Lynch and Eoin Bradley.

Monaghan manager Seámus McEnaney has delayed naming his team until tonight in order to give injured duo James McElroy (calf) and Paul Finlay (concussion) more time to recover.

McEnaney is refusing to get over confident ahead of Sunday's third round qualifier against Louth in Breffni Park, Cavan, although he is still hopeful his team can live up to the pre-championship expectations of making the All-Ireland quarter-finals. "The last five times we have played Louth we have lost so we are not taking this team for granted," he said.

Laois footballer Shane Cooke has failed to get a hearing with the CAC (Appeals) because his appeal was not submitted in writing within three days of the four-week/one-match suspension handed down by the CDC (Discipline). He will now definitely miss the Leinster final this Sunday. Cooke came on as a replacement in the semi-final victory over Kildare but was red-carded after an off-the-ball incident with James Lonergan.

At the initial hearing, Lonergan came out in defence of Cooke but the ever increasing GAA player's version of omerta is regularly ignored by the disciplinary committee. Cooke will be available for selection after this weekend.

The CDC also handed down a one-month suspension to Waterford hurler Eoin McGrath following his dismissal in the championship qualifier defeat to Clare last Sunday. McGrath was red-carded for striking with the hurl and will now miss the All-Ireland quarter-final against Cork on July 24th in Croke Park.

There was also a two-week ban for Wexford footballer Niall Murphy for two yellow cards against Monaghan on June 9th. He incurred the suspension having been previously sent off within 48 weeks of the game.
