Athens - Mrs Hillary Clinton, wife of the US president, urged Britain yesterday to return the controversial Elgin marbles to Greece, saying it was a wish she shared with President Clinton.

"My husband has expressed his wish for the marbles to return to their home," she said in a videotaped message addressed to an international conference in Athens on the classical sculptures removed from the Parthenon temple two centuries ago.

President Clinton had told Greek officials while visiting the Acropolis in Athens last year that, had it been up to him, he would return the marbles, which were removed by a British ambassador, Lord Elgin, in the 19th century.
