The Northern Secretary, Dr Mowlam, will meet loyalist and republican leaders at Stormont today to demand an end to paramilitary "punishment" attacks.
A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Office said that she will be expressing her "abhorrence of these beatings and shootings". She will remind parties "of the need for them to do all they can to influence the relevant paramilitary organisations to call a halt".
This month the IRA has carried out four shootings and 12 beatings while loyalists groups have shot six people, beaten 15, intimidated 37 and forced 33 into exile, according to the group FAIT (Families Against Intimidation and Terror).
Dr Mowlam will hold separate meetings with Sinn Fein, the Progressive Unionist Party, which is linked to the Ulster Volunteer Force, and the Ulster Democratic Party, which speaks for the Ulster Defence Association and Ulster Freedom Fighters.
