The families of two British terrorist suspects held by the United States at Guantanamo Bay are hoping they will be sent back to Britain.

Mr Toney Blair has come under increasing pressure to insist to Mr George Bush that Mr Feroz Abbasi and Mr Moazzam Begg be transferred to the British penal system.

Mr Abbasi and Mr Begg are among six Britons held at the US base on Cuba who face death penalties if convicted by US military commissions.

Downing Street says it is in talks with Washington about repatriation. A member of Mr Begg's family has welcomed the news.Mr Begg (35) was held in Pakistan in February 2002 and in Afghanistan for a year before being taken to the base on Cuba. Mr Abbasi was arrested in Afghanistan in January 2002.

Mr Blair's official spokesman says the Government has "strong reservations" about the military commissions, which are not covered by the US constitution or US civil courts because they are held on foreign soil.

Mr Blair will now come under pressure to take up the issue when he meets President George W Bush in Washington next week.
