Motorists were today warned to drive with extreme care as plummeting temperatures have left many roads treacherous due to black ice.
AA Roadwatch said road temperatures were still below zero in many parts of the country, with icy roads reported in many areas, particularly in the west and north west.
"Drive with extreme care, reduce speed significantly and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front," said a spokeswoman, who added that several minor crashes had already been reported today.
Driving condtions are said to be particularly bad in the Inishowen Peninsula and Barnsmore Gap in Co Donegal.
Gardaí have also advised motorists be aware of icy conditions in Monaghan, Carlow, parts of Cork, Tipperary and throughout Co Meath.
Met EÉireann has forecast sleet or snow for many parts of the country tonight.
