Motorists around the country have been warned to take extra care on the roads for the rest of the day due to continuing icy conditions.
Gardaí and fire services have attended a number of accidents. Several minor crashes took place on the N3 alone in a short period this morning and a man was seriously injured in a crash in Laois.
AA Roadwatch urged drivers to reduce their speed significantly and to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
The N8 is still closed between Abbeyleix and Portloaise at Clonad following a collision in which a man was injured. Diversions are in place until at least 5pm, AA Roadwatch said.
A diversion is in place for southbound traffic on the M7 wishing to travel to Abbeyleix on the N8. Motorists coming from the Dublin direction will remain on the N7 as far as Borris-in-Ossory returning to the N8 via Durrow. Northbound traffic is able to pass the scene in the hard shoulder.
In Wicklow, a crash on the N11 at Scarnagh crossroads south of Arklow also partially blocked the road earlier.
There were also several minor crashes between Mullingar and Dublin on the N4, particularly around Maynooth and on the N6 between Athlone and Kinnegad.
Between Slane and Collon on the N2, the road is very slippery. The N3 from Navan to Dunshaughlin and towards Kells is also extremely icy.
Care is also needed on the M7 around Naas and on the N20 in Cork between Croom and Charleville.
