Met Éireann has warned that strong to near gale force winds could reach speeds of up to 100km/h in some areas tonight.
Local flooding has been reported near Mullingar and around Roscommon town. Further heavy outbreaks of rain are expected in parts of Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster this evening.
"Westerly winds will reach 50-60 km/hr this afternoon and early evening with gusts of 70-100 km/hr, strongest in west Connacht," Met Éireann said in a weather warning.
The strong and gusty winds will ease off later in the night but motorists are advised to take care as wind-blown debris could be problematic. High sided vehicles are particularly vulnerable on open or exposed roads during windy conditions and AARoadwatch has warned motorists to be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.
Motorists are advised to slow down and to allow plenty of time for long journeys.
Clearer skies will develop in parts of Connacht and the midlands, where some frost and fog may form, Met Éireann said.
