A judge has described as "outrageous" the behaviour of a mother of four caught transporting cannabis resin valued at €3,000 from Limerick to Kerry.

Pamela Meaney (28), Feale Drive, Listowel, Co Kerry, appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday charged with possession of cannabis with intent for sale or supply on May 24th, 2005, at O'Curry Street, Limerick.

The court heard that gardaí found two bags, each containing nine ounce bars of cannabis resin, on the floor of a car being driven by Meaney.

Her solicitor, John Devane, told the court that his client "foolishly" agreed to transport the drugs out of fear for her children.

The solicitor said the mother of four was forced to leave Limerick, where her peers were constantly picking on her. Mr Devane said the defendant's family home in Moyross had been attacked.

He described Meaney's actions as an "absolute moment of madness" and said she had never come to the attention of gardaí before.

The court heard Meaney was studying for her Junior Cert and hoped to study for a diploma in public administration next year.

Judge Tom O'Donnell described her behaviour as an "outrageous performance" and said people "involved in this type of enterprise should go to jail".

Judge O'Donnell said it was a pity Meaney hadn't considered her children before she got involved in this enterprise.

The judge adjourned sentencing until May 2nd next but said he did have a custodial sentence in mind.
