IRAQ: Several mortar rounds exploded in central Baghdad yesterday, including two in the Green Zone, the heavily guarded enclave that houses Iraq's interim administration and several foreign embassies.
One mortar round struck near a mobile phone office in the al-Arasat neighbourhood, killing one person.
Meanwhile, 10 insurgents were killed in a clash with Iraqi security forces during a raid in the northern city of Mosul. Maj Gen Rasheed Feleih said two rebels were captured during the gun battle, which flared when a police special forces unit was conducting a sweep.
A US soldier in Mosul was killed later as he was conducting patrols. The US military said the soldier died after being evacuated to a military hospital.
The death of the soldier raises to 985 the number of troops killed in action in Iraq since the invasion last year. More than 9,000 have been wounded, at least 5,000 of them seriously.
Elsewhere, a suicide bomber blew up his car at an Iraqi National Guard checkpoint west of the town of Baiji, killing himself and a civilian.
