Increased protests at Shannon Airport are expected following the announcement that the US military is to send 130,000 extra troops to the Gulf.

A significant amount of these troops are expected to pass through Shannon.

Labour spokesman for Foreign Affairs, Mr Michael D Higgins today called on the Government to review its decision to allow the US military use Shannon before the expected troops arrive.

"When they made their decision to provide facilities at Shannon, Bertie Ahern and his colleagues may have believed that this war would be over in just a matter of days. But that is clearly not going to be the case," Mr Higgins said.

The signs are, he said, that there would be many casualties and that Ireland was party to the carnage through its policy on Shannon.

"The use of Shannon Airport for the provision of facilities for an illegal act under International Law is indefensible," he added.

Green Party leader Mr Trevor Sargent today charged Government parties' TDs of cowardice over the issue.

"The Irish Government is collaborating in illegal murderous acts by allowing overflights and the use of Shannon for refuelling ... I am convinced that, had Bertie Ahern allowed his deputies a free vote last week, the Government motion could have been defeated," he said.
