The number of pensioners forced to sell their homes to pay for personal care each year has more than doubled since Labour came to power, the Liberal Democrats said yesterday.

The party said a Liberal Democrats' survey revealed that in the last year around 70,000 elderly people had to cash in, compared with 40,000 when the figures were last calculated in 1995.
