VIENNA - About 40 monkeys escaped from a zoo and blocked a main highway in southern Austria yesterday, scurrying across the road and screeching at passing cars, the Austrian automobile club said.
Police were only able to recapture a few of the Makaka monkeys, long tailed primates which were recently brought to the zoo from Japan. Most of the animals outran the officers and disappeared in nearby trees and meadows.
