Police were attacked by a crowd after coming to the aid of two victims of a hit-and-run incident.

Police were attacked by a crowd after coming to the aid of two victims of a hit-and-run incident.

The incident occurred when a white van and a Renault Clio collided on the Camlough Road in Newry, Co Down, last night. The van then headed off towards the town centre.

Police who went to help the injured driver of the car and her 13-year-old sister were attacked by a mob of around 30 people who emerged from the nearby Derrybeg Estate.

The crowd threw stones at the officers, smashing the windscreen of the police vehicle.

An ambulance arrived and took the teenage girl to hospita,l but police were forced to leave the scene before speaking to witnesses.
