Police and army in Northern Ireland were attacked in east Belfast last night by a crowd throwing bricks and bottles.

The disturbances began after a crowd approached military vehicles in Bryson Street from the Newtownards Road.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman said a mechanical digger stolen from a nearby building site was used to attack a closed circuit television camera.

Police reinforcements were drafted into the area but the crowd dispersed shortly afterwards.
