With speculation intensifying on the future role and makeup of the European Commission, Ireland must ensure that it continued to have a commissioner, the Minister of State for European Affairs, Mr Gay Mitchell, said yesterday.

"In no circumstances will we contemplate accepting proposals put forward by some of the larger member states that every member state will no longer continue to have a commissioner," he said.
