The chairman of the Dail Public Accounts Committee, Mr Jim Mitchell TD, has revealed that he may require a liver transplant after being diagnosed with life-threatening cancer. He is suffering from a rare form of cancer which can be fatal in 50 per cent of cases.
Mr Mitchell's condition was diagnosed last year during a routine back operation. He is awaiting the results of medical tests conducted recently in the US but said it was probable he would have to undergo a transplant. He is being treated at St Vincent's Hospital, Dublin. Mr Mitchell has previously undergone treatment for stomach cancer.
In an interview on RTE's Late Late Show, the Dublin Central deputy said he did not plan on retiring from politics and would stand in the next general election.
