Minimum wage increase comes into effect

The National Minimum Wage of £4.70 came into effect today.

The National Minimum Wage of £4.70 came into effect today.

The Tánaiste Mary Harney said today’s increase was the first of two increases agreed by the social partners and accepted under the terms of the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness.

The National Minimum Wage Act, 2000, was introduced on April 1st. Ms Harney added that labour inspectors would be visiting employers to ensure compliance with the increased rate.

From October 1st, 2002, the minimum wage will increase to £5.
