Algiers - Twenty-two government militiamen operating against Muslim rebels were killed when mines exploded east of Algiers, a newspaper reported yesterday. L'Athentique daily quoted eyewitnesses as saying the 22 "patriots" - militias armed by the government to fight Islamist rebels in remote regions - died in the blasts in Khenchela, 400 km east of the capital.
