Jakarta - Indonesia's military put on a public show of unity yesterday when the armed forces chief, Gen Wiranto, conducted a change-of-command ceremony for a rival general who is a son-in-law of the deposed president, Gen Suharto.
Meanwhile Indonesia's new government marked its first shaky week in power by promising general elections in 1999 and releasing two more prisoners as the IMF said the economy had deteriorated so badly its prescriptions had to be rewritten. Lieut Gen Prabowo Subianto, Mr Suharto's son-in-law, appeared grim-faced at times during the ceremony at a military base in Jakarta marking his appointment as head of an army college outside the capital.
