Michael Healy-Rae is elected Kerry mayor

Mr Michael Healy-Rae (Ind) has been elected Mayor of Kerry County Council

Mr Michael Healy-Rae (Ind) has been elected Mayor of Kerry County Council. He succeeds Mr Paul O'Donoghue (FF), Kerry's first mayor after the county opted for this title to replace "chairman" of the council. The son of Mr Jackie Healy-Rae TD, Cllr Michael Healy-Rae was elected with the support of his father and FF members, defeating Cllr Seamus MacGearailt (FG).

His election was part of an agreement reached between FF and the Healy-Raes after the 1999 local elections when FF was short two seats for an overall majority.
